Friedrich Merz‘s Biography
Friedrich Merz is a leading German lawyer and politician. He is a partner at Mayer Brown and heads the corporate practice in Germany. He focuses on corporate matters, including mergers and acquisitions, banking, finance and compliance. As a politician, he is a former member of the European Parliament (1989-94), a former member of the German Bundestag (1994-2009) and former Chairman of the CDU/CSU-Parliamentary Group (2000-02).
Prior to joining Mayer Brown, Merz was a partner with two national law firms in Cologne (1989–2004) and worked for the German Association of Chemical Industry in Frankfurt/Bonn (1986–89). He also served as judge at the Local Court in Saarbrücken (1985–86).
Merz is part of numerous supervisory boards, including Deutsche Börse (the German Stock Exchange), Axa, and HSBC Trinkaus. Additionally he is on the administrative board of BASF Antwerp, Stadler Rail AG, and on the advisory board of Borussia Dortmund and Commerzbank.
Since 2009 Merz has been chairman of the international network Atlantik-Brücke and member of the Trilateral Commission of Europe. He is a founding member of the friends of the “Initiative Neue Soziale Marktwirtschaft INSM“ (new social market economy), and of the future think tank Frankfurter Zukunftsrat.
