Biography

An award-winning recognised authority in the global climate change movement and a qualified Barrister with 30+ years’ experience, James serves on boards and advisory committee’s across financial, legal, academic and governmental organisations. These include Octopus (ORIT), Systemiq, Pollination Group, Howden, DFS, Green Finance Institute, Neste, Sun New Energy, Blue Marine Foundation, Smart Surfaces Coalition, IP Group, IDH, Solar Century and Crown Agents a not-for-profit international development company and was the previously Chairman (2012 – 2020) of Overseas Development Institute (ODI). James is the chairman of Crown Agents.

Until 2015, James was Chairman of Climate Change Capital (CCC), which he co-founded in 2003 and developed into an investment bank employing 150 people with US$1.6 billion under management. Prior to CCC, James was Counsel to Baker & McKenzie and was the founder and the head of their Climate Change and Clean Energy Practice and co-founded the Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development (FIELD) and the Centre for International Environmental Law (CIEL). He has spent much of his legal career focusing on climate matters including negotiating the UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol as an advisor to the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS).

James is a Friend of COP26 and was an advisor to Presidencies of the COP20, COP22, COP23 climate negotiations. He has academic appointments/fellowships at Yale, Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, Grantham Institute, Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) and the Colorado School of Mines.
