Dame Helen Alexander is Chancellor of the University of Southampton. She was President of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) until June 2011 and Deputy President until June 2012. From 1997-2008 she was Chief Executive of the Economist Group.
She is a Trustee of Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s World Wide Web Foundation, Thomson-Reuters, the Grand Palais in Paris and Chair of the Advisory Council at the Said Business School at the University of Oxford. She is Chairman of the Port of London Authority (PLA) and of Incisive Media. She is also deputy chairman of esure Group Holdings, a non-executive director of Rolls-Royce Group plc, and senior adviser to Bain Capital.
She has a BA from the University of Oxford and an MBA from INSEAD. While she was Chief Executive of the Economist Group, publisher of the Economist newspaper, the magazine enjoyed record circulation growth worldwide. She was previously Managing Director of the Economist Intelligence Unit, where she turned the company round and set the path for digital transformation, and Marketing Manager and then Circulation Director of the Economist.
Her varied and successful business career enables her to speak with authority on a range of business topics; leadership, change, strategy, globalisation and media.
