Deepak Chopra is an expert in the field of mind-body healing and an acclaimed author on the subject of alternative medicine. Through his books and videos, he has become one of the best-known figures in alternative medicine.
Dr Deepak Chopra was born in New Delhi in 1947, he attended the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, before emigrating to the US in 1970, where he completed residencies in internal medicine and endocrinology. He went on to become Chief of Staff at the New England memorial Hospital and established a thriving private practise as well.
After becoming disenchanted with Western medicine and its reliance on prescription drugs, Dr Chopra turned to alternative medicine in the mid 1980’s after meeting Maharishi Mahesh yogi, the leader of the Transcendental Meditation Movement.
In 1995, Dr Deepak Chopra, already a prolific author, founded the Chopra Centre for Well Being in California.
Dr Chopra’s first book, ‘Quantum Healing: Exploring the Frontiers of Mind/Body Medicine’, published in 1989, proved a to be a decent seller. It was, however, his 1993 release, ‘Ageless Body, Timeless Mind’, which shot Dr Chopra to a full-fledged celebrity, selling more than a million hardcover copies alone.
At a time when the self-help industry was coming into its own, Dr Chopra became one of its leading faces. His core message centres around the idea that the reliance on a material world complicates finding peace and happiness. He believes that the answers to our health and happiness can be found internally.
Dr Chopra is the author of more than 80 books translated into over 43 languages, including numerous New York Times bestsellers. Two of his books, ‘Ageless Body, Timeless Mind’ and ‘The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success’, have been recognised on The Books of The Century Bestsellers list. He has also contributed as a regular columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and the Washington Post.
Dr Chopra serves as co-founder of Jiyo, Adjunct Professor at Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Adjunct Professor at Columbia Business School, Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of California and Senior Scientist with The Gallup Organisation.
Dr Chopra has been recognised as one of ‘The 100 Most Influential People in Health and Fitness’ by Greatist.com. The World Post and The Huffington Post global internet survey ranked Dr Chopra #17 Influential Thinker in the World and #1 in Medicine.
