James serves on advisory boards and committees – these include Blue Marine Foundation, Howden Group, Ignite, Korn Ferry, Octopus (ORIT), Orbital Engery, Pollination Group, Smart Surfaces Coalition, Sun New Energy, Undaunted, World Economic Forum and Worthwhile Capital. James is Non-Executive Chair of Professional Cricketers Association (PCA) and Chairman of Crown Agents a not-for-profit international development company and was previously Chairman (2012 – 2020) of Overseas Development Institute (ODI).
Until 2015, James was Chairman of Climate Change Capital (CCC), which he co-founded in 2003 and developed into an investment bank employing 150 people with US$1.6 billion under management. Prior to CCC, James was Counsel to Baker & McKenzie and was the founder and the head of their Climate Change and Clean Energy Practice and co-founded the Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development (FIELD) and the Centre for International Environmental Law (CIEL). He spent much of his legal career focusing on climate matters including negotiating the UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol as an advisor to the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS).
James is a Friend of COP26 and was an advisor to Presidencies and Delegations for COP20, COP22, COP23 and COP28. He has academic appointments/fellowships at Yale, Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, Grantham Institute, Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) and the Colorado School of Mines.
