Janjaap Ruijssenaars is an award winning architect who taught at the Academy of Architecture Amsterdam and the Academy of Architecture Rotterdam.

He founded the company Universe Architecture which works in the fields of urbanism, architecture, design and research. He became globally successful with a simple yet effective approach for projects: 1) Question 2) Answer 3) Discovery.

His many projects include ‘The Floating Bed’ which sits on a magnetic field. It was awarded Best Invention by TIME Magazine and used in the Hollywood film Arthur.  Other projects include the ‘Landscape House Building’ which is to be constructed using a large 3d printer.  It became the most popular item of the year on dezeen.com.  TIME magazine commented: “The 3D-Printed House?! A Dutch Architect and Mathematician Break the Mold”.

His invention Gravity Energy was awarded the Move Together Award and funded by a Dutch government program. The invention is a patented technique that harnesses the omnipresent force of gravity to generate electricity in a more efficient way. REUTERS: ‘’Gravity Energy generator could revolutionize renewables’’.

His innovative modular Tetris House project which builds apartments with the highest possible quality at the highest possible density, was described as “Innovative Row Housing with a 360 Degree View!” by the Dutch National Press Agency.

Ruijssenaars was urban planner for a project that transformed a large area underneath a highway from a no-go area into the center of the community. The project won Best European Public Space. Earlier in his career, he built an innovative education building at a high school that was listed among the Best Debut Buildings in Europe (Bauwelt Prize).

He is currently active as urban planner for the city of Amsterdam, working on the densification of the South-East of the city.
