Biography

Jean Jouzel is a paleo-climate scientist at the Laboratory for Climate Sciences and the Environment. It is within this organization that he has spent most of his scientific career, largely devoted to the reconstruction of past climates from ice studies of Antarctica and Greenland – work for which he is internationally renowned.

He has been Research Director and Deputy Director of the Laboratory for Climate Sciences and the Environment, with which he is still associated. He then became director of the Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace (IPSL) which brings together laboratories working in the Paris on both climate and environment.

He has been a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for over 20 years and is a leader in the dissemination to the public of the consequences of human activities on the planet’s climate. Jean Jouzel is also a member of the Board of the National Research Agency, as President of the High Council for Science and Technology.

During his career, he has authored more than 250 scientific publications, around 200 of which have been published in leading scientific journals such as ‘Nature or Science’ and he is one of the most cited authors in the science of the universe. Jean Jouzel belongs to the community of scientists convinced (and worried) of the potential magnitude of the problem posed to the world by increasing the concentration of greenhouse gas emissions related to human activities, and the urgency to analyze its effects.
