Biography

With several decades spent in senior governmental positions, guiding both Labor and Conservative governments in financial and treasury matters, Sir John Gieve is a leading insight into the future of banking, global financial systems, and UK public policy and financial services.

During his twenty years at UK Treasury, he was closely involved in banking and City regulation, energy, and public services. He carried out several spending reviews and served as Private Secretary to three Chancellors: Nigel Lawson John Major and Norman Lamont.

From 2001 to 2005, he served as Permanent Secretary at the Home Office where he led the department in responding to the increased terrorist threat that followed 9/11, and from 2006 – 2009, he was Deputy Governor of the Bank of England. He was also a member of the Monetary Policy Committee which sets interest rates in the UK and a board member of the Financial Services Authority (FSA).

As well as his work in government, John has held roles as independent director and Chair of the Risk Committee of Morgan Stanley International (2012-15), non-executive director of CLS, the forex settlement system (2011-2018), and Chair of Nesta, the innovation charity.

Sir John Gieve is currently the Chair of Homerton NHS Trust, the Chair of innovation charity, Nesta, a member of the Advisory Board for MNI Connect, and independent director of Vocalink the UK’s leading payments system.
