Biography

David Lammy is a British politician who served as Foreign Secretary (2024–2025), Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (2025–2026) and Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor (2025–2026) in the Labour Government. He has been the Member of Parliament for Tottenham, London since 2000, and previously held various junior ministerial positions under Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown between 2002 and 2010.

As Foreign Secretary, David played a central role in shaping the UK’s response to the defining international crises of the time. He helped navigate Britain’s relationship with the United States in the wake of new tariffs and a more volatile global trading environment, while also working to deepen cooperation with European allies through a long-overdue post-Brexit reset between the United Kingdom and the European Union. He made closer security partnership with Europe a priority, including on defence, energy, migration, and the climate crisis, and was instrumental in maintaining steadfast support for Ukraine and shaping the UK’s approach to conflict in the Middle East. He also helped negotiate the transfer of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, while retaining the strategically crucial joint UK-US military base at Diego Garcia in the central Indian Ocean.

As Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary, David was at the centre of efforts to rescue a justice system under enormous strain and restore public confidence in it, placing victims, accountability, and delivery at the heart of the justice agenda. He also helped bring the long-campaigned-for Hillsborough Law to Parliament in July 2026.

Since his election to Parliament in 2000, David has built a reputation as one of the UK’s most visible and forceful voices on race, justice, and equality. He led the campaign for Windrush British citizens to be granted full citizenship and compensation and helped turn Windrush into a defining test of fairness, accountability and belonging in modern Britain. In 2017, he published the influential Lammy Review into racial disparity in the UK criminal justice system, helped cement his place as a serious reformer and campaigner for change.
