Hashi Mohamed is one of the UK’s leading junior barristers, a broadcaster at the BBC and an author. He was called to the Bar (The Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn) in 2010, and now at No5 Chambers he practices in public law with a specific focus on planning and environmental law. Mohamed presents documentaries on BBC Radio 4, most recently on 20 years since the inquiry into the murder of Stephen Lawrence, and on access to the top professions.
One of 12 children, born to an illiterate mother, Mohamed’s father died when he was just 9. Soon after, he came to the UK as an unaccompanied child refugee from Kenya in the summer of 1993. When Hashi Mohamed arrived he spoke basic English, attended failing schools and was raised exclusively on state benefits in a deprived area of North West London. Today, he is also a published author who attended Oxford University for his postgraduate degree and Bar School on a full scholarship.
His story is one of hope and ambition, aspiration and inspiration, luck and tragedy. He uses his personal journey to draw powerful conclusions for business and enterprise, public sector and central government – about devising better policy, about resilience, focus and the ability to adapt in the pursuit of success. The lessons to be drawn are multifaceted and relevant to many people and industries.
Hashi Mohamed writes and has been featured regularly in various newspaper publications, including The Times, The Sunday Times, The Financial Times, The Guardian, The Observer and Prospect Magazine. In January 2020, Profile Books published Hashi’s first literary work – People Like Us; What it takes to Make it in Modern Britain – a non-fiction aiming to appraise the state of social mobility in modern Britain. The book is currently out in all bookstores, available in audio form as well.
"Hashi Mohamed spoke about social mobility in the UK at our leadership conference and received a rare standing ovation. He tells an important, challenging and often confronting story that combines personal experience, sharp observation and intelligent analysis and he delivers it with passion, warmth and humour. Hashi's address sparked questions and discussion that continued well into the evening and he left the room buzzing."

“At our Diversity Week celebrations in 2020, Hashi shared his personal experiences with candour and humour, layered on top of his deep expertise of the broader societal issues at play: a powerful combination. Even via a virtual platform he really connected with our people, answering their (many!) questions with honesty and openness. The feedback we received was fantastic – Hashi’s talk was described as “very inspiring”, “thought-provoking”, “challenging and compelling” and “one of the most worthwhile talks I’ve listened to”."

“HFMA booked Hashi to close one of our finance forum events in February 2021, which focused on integrated health and care between the NHS and local government. It was a great closing session for the event, with our delegates describing the session as “inspiring” and “thought provoking”. Hashi was effective in discussing the bigger picture of social mobility in the context of health and care, and challenging delegates to think differently about professional opportunity in today’s world.”
Jonathan Richards, Events manager, HFMA
“Hashi Mohammed spoke at our 2020 International Men’s Day Summit. Hashi spoke about Making it in Modern Britain sharing perspectives on education, social factors, developing confidence and what impact these factors can have on your success in life. He talked about determination, imagination and focus and how important these are in a society which has a rigid way of thinking. Hashi also spoke about the importance of mentorship which has real resonance with our audience. Hashi was great to work with and helped us make filming during a challenging time with Covid restrictions in place really simple. Our Summit participants found Hashi’s contribution really valuable.”
