Biography

Declan Power is an independent security and defence analyst, author and former career soldier. In addition to providing advice on crisis/risk management and analytical techniques, he delivers the Terrorism and International Security Studies course at City Colleges Dublin, a course he devised for a wide variety of security practitioners.

He is currently part of the Security and Defence Working Group with the Institute for International and European Affairs (IIEA) think-tank in Dublin and regularly writes and broadcasts on security and defence matters. He also has been available to moderate on conferences and presentations involving embassies, government departments and corporate entities. He has run workshops and presentations on a wide variety of security related subjects including protective intelligence techniques, situational awareness and negotiation and planning in crisis.

He is also available for private briefings on the international and domestic security and threat landscape. Prior to this Declan worked abroad extensively with the European Union and NATO on projects throughout Africa, Europe and the Middle East involving counter-terrorism and violent extremism. He also served widely with the UN as a civil-military and crisis management specialist across a variety of conflict zones resolving kidnappings negotiating access of UN personnel into contested areas.

He led a bilateral Irish-Swiss project to South Sudan between 2014 to 2016 to develop a protective intelligence system for INGOs working with the UN in the region. Declan was previously a panellist on the 2015 White Paper on Defence and was an adjunct teaching fellow on conflict studies with TCD. He is the author of ‘Siege at Jadotville’, since adapted for the Netflix film of similar title.
