Biography

Graeme Smith was captain of the South African cricket team from 2003-14, and widely recognised as the most successful Test cricket captain of all time.

Smith took over the captaincy of the South African team aged 22, when cricket in his country was in turmoil following scandal, failure and political difficulties. He captained the national team in 108 of his 117 matches and is one of the very few people who have captained their country in over 100 Test matches. Under his leadership and guidance, Smith led South Africa to the No 1 ranking in World Cricket.

Apart from his phenomenal achievements as captain, Smith holds numerous other records in cricket, one being the highest scoring foreign batsmen at Lords the home of cricket with a score of 259. His greatest legacy however is changing the landscape of cricket in South Africa, by embracing diversity and developing a strong culture and value system within the national team dubbed Protea Fire, which has become the mantra of all South African cricket teams.

Smith is now involved in a variety of business ranging from fuel supply to insurance. In 2016 he started a company that manufactures supplies for the restaurant and catering trade.
