Morten Olsen is quantifying new automation technology using text analysis of patents. He uses these measures to estimate the drivers and consequences of new automation technology.
His areas of expertise include the consequences of new automation technology on employment and income inequality, superstar economics and top income inequality as well as the study of the effects of globalisation on domestic labour markets.
Morten Olsen has extensive experience as a public speaker on these and many other topics. Previously, he has worked on the effects of trade liberalisation on income inequality. Further he has served in an advisory capacity to the European Commission as well as the Danish Prime Minister. Olsen has published a number of empirical and theoretical papers on economic growth, globalisation, and technology: “The Rise of the Machines: Automation, Horizontal Innovation, and Income Inequality” (2022), “Adverse Selection as a Policy Instrument” (2019), “The Spill-over Effect of Income Inequality” (2019), “Long-term Relationships: Static Gains and Dynamics Inefficiencies” (2018), “How Firms Overcome Weak International Contract Enforcement: Repeated Interaction, Collective Punishment, and Trade Finance” (2016). In addition, his writing has been featured and cited in newspapers around the world (Forbes, Valor Econômico, IESE International Economic Review, Exame…).
Morten Olsen received his undergraduate degree from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark and his Doctorate of Economics from Harvard University. Prior to joining the University of Copenhagen, he taught at IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain as well as held visiting positions at the University of Zurich, the University of Chicago, and INSEAD Business School.
