Serge Betsen was born march 25 of 1974 at Kumba, Cameroun. He moved to Paris with his family when he was 9 years old and discovered rugby at 12 years old at the club “Clichy la Garenne”.
In 1991, he pursued his studies at Bayonne and was integrated at the club “Biarritz Olympique”. His first debut was with France’s team the 22 of march 1997 against Italy’s team.
In 2000, he participated at the first tournament of the Six Nations Championship. He was nicknamed “la faucheuse (the Grim Reaper)” thanks to his famous tackles, he was named the best tackler by several rugby specialists and was feared by his opponents. In 2002 he was named the best player of the French championship by the “Oscar Midi Olympique”. In 2004 he was named the “World Rugby Player of the Year” by the IRB.
In 2009 he was made captain of the London Wasps. Then signed with the London Scottish from 2012-2013 as a defense coach.
Serge Betsen is a member of the ‘Champions for Peace’ club, a group of 54 famous elite athletes committed to serving peace in the world through sport. He also created the Serge Betsen Academy in 2004. This charity aims to help underprivileged children in Cameroon. The charity introduces the children to rugby, supports the children’s education and access to basic healthcare. In 2013, he created another charity, “The French Legends”, which reunites former rugby internationals and professionals in order to participate in charity matches and events to support other charities.
He now has a Business Consulting firm. He offers tailored workshops on the following topics: “Team Spirit”, “Wellbeing”, “Motivation and Performance”, “Mental and Physical Preparation”.
