Shubhra Chadda is the co-founder at Chumbak Design, one of India’s leading design houses, bringing together a curated mix of clothing accessories and home décor.
In 2009 Shubhra Chadda co-founded Chumbak with her husband, Vivek Prabhakar. The company started out as an idea to create design focused Indiathemed souvenirs.
The couple had to sell their house to start the company, it was a gamble, but one that has paid off. Within the first six months, the company broke even. Prabhakar quit his job at Sun Microsystems and joined Chumbak fulltime in 2011 as CEO, to look after marketing and sales while Shubhra oversees the design and product development.
Chumbak has evolved over the years to become a lifestyle brand. The first two years the company only retailed through e-commerce and multi-brand outlets. Following this the brand went into rapid expansion mode and Shubhra opened 44 small retail kiosks in a year.
The next change in strategy came in 2015, when Chumbak became more of a recognized cult brand, this led to more expansion and the launch of their first exclusive large store. This new strategy required a wider inventory and product range, which came in the form of the home and fashion lines.
Shubhra Chadda now has her sights set very high, ‘The dream is to be a lifestyle brand born in India that is recognized and respected internationally’, she says.
