Tahir is an experienced public service, banking, treasury, and finance professional with a demonstrated successful track record in a career spanning 28 years. He has experience in both the public and private sectors, serving until the end of 2024 as the Executive President of the Central Bank of Oman (Governor). In this role, Tahir assumed the position of Alternate Governor of the IMF for Oman, participating in key committee meetings (including the IMFC), functions, and tasks of the Fund, along with cross-functional engagements with the World Bank Group. He also served as Governor of the Arab Monetary Fund, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Central Bank Governors’ Committee, and several other institutions.
For more than seven years, he was the Chairman of Oman’s National Anti-Money Laundering and Combating of Terrorism Financing Committee (AML/CFT), working closely with the global authority in this field, the FATF. Tahir also chaired the country’s Financial Stability Committee for over seven years.
Tahir has extensive experience serving on the boards of directors and committees of both private and public sector companies, including regionally and internationally registered entities. Until the end of 2024, he was the Chairman of Gulf Payments Co., the Arabian GCC’s flagship company for payment systems integration and cooperation. He is currently the Chairman of Dhofar Insurance Co. (publicly listed), a leading insurance company in Oman (the largest in the country in 2024 in terms of GWP).

– Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), Oman’s largest oil producer
– Oman LNG LLC, Oman’s largest (and only) LNG producer and exporter
– Oman Refineries & Petrochemicals Industries Co. (Orpic, now part of the OQ Group)
– State General Reserve Fund (Oman’s sovereign wealth fund, now called OIA)
– National Bank of Oman (a publicly listed bank)
– Sohar International Bank (a publicly listed bank)
Tahir is also well-acquainted with the corporate financial auditing landscape. In almost all the entities where he served as a board member, he chaired their Board Audit Committees.
