He has written several critically acclaimed books, focusing predominantly on ancient and medieval history. Rubicon, an examination of the fall of Rome’s Republic, won the Hessell-Tiltman Prize and was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize and his book, Dominion, was the Sunday Times’ History Book of the Year for 2019.
In addition to writing, Tom has presented programmes for television and radio. His 2012 Channel 4 documentary Islam: The Untold Story explored the early history of Islam, a subject he touched on again his 2017 documentary, Isis: The Origins of Violence.
