Sir Antony Beevor FRSL, FRHistS is an internationally renowned historian and one of the world’s bestselling writers on military history. After serving as a regular officer and tank commander in the British Army in Germany, Antony Beevor left the Army after five years to focus on writing. His works have since been translated into thirty-seven languages and have sold more than nine million copies worldwide.
Antony Beevor’s early publications include Inside the British Army (1990) and Crete: The Battle and the Resistance (1991), which won the Runciman Prize. He has contributed to several edited volumes, among them The British Army, Manpower and Society into the Twenty-First Century, edited by Hew Strachan, and “The End of 1942 – A Turning Point in World War II and in the Comprehension of the Final Solution?” published by Yad Vashem in 2018.
His breakthrough book, Stalingrad (1998), established Antony Beevor as a major voice in contemporary history. The book won the first Samuel Johnson Prize, the Wolfson Prize for History and the Hawthornden Prize for Literature. Since its publication, he has lectured at staff colleges and military headquarters in many countries. In 2018, the British Army and the German Bundeswehr based their first major joint study of urban warfare, led by General Sir Patrick Sanders, on “Beevor’s Lessons from Urban Conflicts”.
Antony Beevor has written extensively on the Second World War and European conflicts. His study of the Spanish Civil War, published in Spain as La guerra civil española, became a No.1 bestseller and received the La Vanguardia prize for non-fiction. D-Day: The Battle for Normandy received the Westminster Medal from the Royal United Services Institute. His other notable works include Berlin: The Downfall 1945, The Mystery of Olga Chekhova, The Second World War, Ardennes 1944: Hitler’s Last Gamble, Arnhem: The Battle for the Bridges, 1944 and Russia: Revolution and Civil War, 1917–1921.
Antony Beevor’s contribution to historical scholarship has been recognised with numerous honours. In 1997 he was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, and in 2008 he received the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana from the President of Estonia. In 2016 he was made Commandeur de l’Ordre de la Couronne in Belgium, and in 2014 he received the Pritzker Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing.
A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and the Royal Historical Society, Antony Beevor was the 2002–2003 Lees-Knowles Lecturer at the University of Cambridge. He is an Honorary Fellow of King’s College London and holds honorary Doctor of Letters degrees from four other universities. He was knighted in 2017 for services to literature.
