Gabriel Felbermayr is one of the leading experts in trade policy and the Director of the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO). Until October 2021, he was President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.
After studying economics at the University of Linz, Gabriel Felbermayr (*1976 in Steyr, Austria) went to Florence to complete his doctorate. From 2004 to 2005, he was an Associate Consultant at McKinsey & Co. in Vienna, and subsequently became Assistant Professor at the University of Tübingen until 2008. From 2009 to 2010, he held a chair in International Economics at the University of Hohenheim, and afterwards he was head of the ifo Center for International Economics at the University of Munich until 2019, where he also worked as a full Professor of International Economics.
In March 2019, Gabriel Felbermayr became President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and held the Chair of Economics at Kiel University. In October 2021, he moved to the Austrian Institute of Economic Research as Director.
Gabriel Felbermayr holds various roles and positions. For example, he is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy; Co-Editor of the European Economic Review and Associate Editor of the Journal of the European Economic Association.
His research and advisory activities focus on questions of global economic governance, European economic integration, and German economic policy.
