Günther Oettinger was Prime Minister of the State of Baden-Württemberg from 2005 to 2010. He then served as Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Energy, as the European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society and as the European Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources in the college of the Juncker Commission.
Oettinger (*1953) belonged to the the Stuttgart state parliament from 1984 to 2010 and from 1991 to 2005 he was Leader of the CDU Parliamentary Group. From 2004 to 2010 he was prime minister of Baden-Württemberg. In addition to achieving a balanced budget, important successes in his terms of office include the improvement of childcare as well as important infrastructure measures.
At the end of 2009, Federal Chancellor Merkel proposed him as a German member of the European Commission and Commission President José Manuel Barroso assigned him the portfolio of the Energy Commissioner, which he occupied from 2010 to 2014 impressing with his expertise and negotiating skills. From July to September 2014 he was Vice-President of the Commission and from 2014 to 2016 he was EU Commissioner for Digital Economy. Due to his impressing economic expertise, he then served as Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources until November 2019.
In 2019, after almost four decades of active politics, he left the political arena and switched to the consulting business. With Oettinger Consulting, which he founded, he dedicates himself to advising companies, public institutions and individuals in economic and political matters.
