Biography

Guy Forget is a French former professional tennis player. During his career, he helped France win the Davis Cup in 1991 and 1996. Since retiring as a player, he has served as France’s Davis Cup team and Fed cup teams captain.

As a junior, Guy Forget won the famous Orange Bowl in Miami in 1982, leading him to start his professional career and finish his first year at 70th place in the world ATP rankings. In 1986, he won his first single ATP tournament in Toulouse, where both his father and grandfather had won respectively in 1946 and 1966, he won again in 1991 and 1992. In 1987, he reached the French Open final in doubles with Yannick Noah, showing that he was going to be one of the best players in doubles. In 1989, he won another single title in Nancy and became World Doubles Champion with Swiss player Jakob Hlasek.

The year 1991 was the most successful of Forget’s career when he won 6 single titles including a Master Series in Paris-Bercy and reached the ATP 4th rank the second best rank for a French player after Yannick Noah.

After a knee injury in 1993 he struggled to recover to form and only reached ATP 34th place in 1996, after his last single win in Marseille and a second Davis Cup win in Sweden. He ended his career in June 1997 where he he won a total of 11 top-level singles titles and 28 doubles titles.

Guy’s down-to-earth and kind personality has been noticed and in 1990,he received the “Prix Orange”,given by the French press to the most pleasant player of the year.

Since retiring as a player, Forget has served as France’s Davis Cup team captain his best result was France’s performance in 2003. He became France’s FED Cup team captain in 1999, but resigned from the post in 2004 in order to focus on his Davis Cup duties.

Today he is Director for the Paris Bercy Masters and commentates on tennis events on tv and radio.
