Biography

Vinod Rai is an Indian economist who served as the 11th Comptroller and Auditor General of India until 2013. He is the current chairman of UN Panel of External Auditors. Rai is widely considered a symbol of the anti-corruption movement and is credited with having turned the office of the CAG into a powerful force for accountability and transparency in contemporary India. Forbes described Rai as being among that rare breed of civil servants who knows how to get work done in government.

 

In January 2017, the Supreme Court of India appointed Rai the interim President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

 

Rai is the chairman of the United Nations Panel of External Auditors and member of the Governing Board of the International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions. The panel of External Auditors plays an important role in promoting accountability and strengthening governance mechanisms in the UN organisations.

 

As Secretary in the Ministry of Finance he started changes in the Banking, Insurance and Pensions departments. He filled in as a Director on the Boards of State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, Life Insurance Corporation of India and Infrastructure Development and Finance Company of India. He set up the India Infrastructure Finance Company which also has an office in London.

 

Vinod Rai was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award, in recognition of his services to the country.

 

Vinod Rai has a Masters in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi and a Masters in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University, USA.
