Gavin Patterson served as Chief Executive of BT Group for almost six years from 2013 to 2019, having previously been a Group Board Director for a total of 11 years. BT is a global communications services company that brings together advanced networks and technology with deep expertise, helping businesses to grow, communities to thrive and individuals to get more out of life.
As Chief Executive, Gavin Patterson led the completion of BT’s superfast fibre broadband rollout, delivering near-universal coverage in the UK, and initiated the first phase of ultrafast fibre-to-the-home deployment. He negotiated the £15 billion acquisition of EE, creating the UK’s leading converged communications provider.
Gavin Patterson also drove BT’s strategic move into content, launching the award-winning BT Sport, and oversaw the development of the company’s market-leading cyber security practice. A strong advocate of corporate responsibility, he championed BT’s globally recognised social purpose agenda, focusing on sustainability, employee volunteering and technology literacy in schools.
Patterson joined BT in 2004 as Group Managing Director, Consumer, and was promoted in 2008 to Executive Director and CEO of BT Retail, taking responsibility for BT’s UK and Ireland consumer and enterprise businesses. Before BT, he spent four years at Virgin Media, where he served as Managing Director of the Consumer Division and helped to launch broadband in the UK. Earlier in his career, he spent nine years at Procter & Gamble, rising to become European Marketing Director.
Beyond his executive roles, Gavin Patterson has contributed widely to business and public life. From 2010 to 2013 he served on the advisory board of the Cambridge Judge Business School, and from 2011 to 2014 he was President of the Advertising Association. As BT Chief Executive he co-chaired the UK Government’s Cyber Growth Partnership and was a member of the CBI President’s Committee, the British American Business Council and the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum.
Gavin Patterson is currently a Non-Executive Director at British Airways plc, a Trustee of the British Museum, serves on the board of the charity Movement to Work, is a Vice President of the Royal Television Society and a Fellow of the Institute of Telecommunications Professionals.
He graduated from the University of Cambridge with a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering and is married with four children.
