Biography

About Nell Watson

Eleanor ‘Nell’ Watson is an engineer, philosopher, and author working at the intersection of AI safety, machine psychology, and emerging technologies. Her work focuses on embedding safety, transparency, and human-centred values into the heart of AI systems, and on preparing organisations for a world in which AI increasingly acts on our behalf.

She serves as IEEE AI Ethics Maestro and President of the European Responsible Artificial Intelligence Office (EURAIO), and has helped drive some of the most significant AI ethics standardisation and certification initiatives at the IEEE, including as Chair of the ECPAIS Transparency Group and Vice Chair of the P7001 Standard for Autonomous Systems. She has guided philosophical strategy for Apple as an Executive Consultant, and her contributions span roles as Senior Scientific Advisor to The Future Society and Senior Fellow at The Atlantic Council. The Royal Academy of Engineering has honoured her as an Icon for her pioneering impact.

A pioneer in machine psychology, Nell created Psychopathia Machinalis, a clinical framework for diagnosing AI behavioural pathologies, and founded Creed Space, a platform for constitutional AI governance. She is the author of Taming the Machine (Kogan Page, 2024) and co-author of Safer Agentic AI (Kogan Page, 2026). She has addressed the World Bank, the UN General Assembly, and The Royal Society.
