Dr Johnny Ryan is a historian of technological change and an expert on digital markets and tech regulation. He has held leadership roles in the tech, advertising, and media industries.
Dr Ryan has been called on to testify at the United States Senate, the European Commission, and European Parliament. He has shaped digital law in the United States, Europe, and Africa. Die Zeit has called him “Google’s biggest headache”. Protocol called him “The thorn in Google’s side”.
He has written for The Economist, The Guardian, NATO Review, Time, Bloomberg, American Economic Review, London Business School Review, and many others. His expertise and interventions have appeared in The New York Times, The Financial Times, Wall St. Journal, Washington Post, Wired, Le Monde, Spiegel, Wired, BBC, Sky News, and other top tier global media.
He is the author of two books on digital issues, and the Director of Enforce, which investigates and litigates to defend against digital dystopia. He has a PhD from the University of Cambridge where he studied the spread of radical ideas on the Internet. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
