About Steve Backshall

Steve Backshall is a BAFTA-winning wildlife presenter, author and conservationist who inspires audiences with his adventurous storytelling, environmental insight, and passion for the natural world.

Steve Backshall is a BAFTA award-winning wildlife expert, presenter and author, known for his deep knowledge of the natural world and his ability to communicate it with clarity, energy and passion. One of the UK’s most recognisable faces in natural history broadcasting, Steve has spent his career exploring some of the most remote and threatened environments on Earth, bringing audiences closer to wildlife through his acclaimed television work.

He has presented over 100 hours of children’s wildlife programming through the hugely popular Deadly 60 franchise, and more recently led Whale with Steve Backshall and Shark with Steve Backshall for Sky Nature, helping to shift perceptions around ocean wildlife. In 2022, he fronted BBC One’s Our Changing Planet, a landmark seven-year series tracking the world’s most fragile ecosystems and the efforts underway to protect them.

Steve’s new series, Expedition with Steve Backshall, has just launched on BBC Two, building on the success of his original Expedition series for UKTV and accompanying book. Each episode showcases Steve’s trademark curiosity, resilience and respect for nature, as he ventures into uncharted territory in search of new discoveries.

Away from the screen, Steve is the author of 13 books, including Wildlings: How to Raise Your Family in Nature, co-written with his wife, Olympic gold medallist Helen Glover. The book offers a practical, family-focused guide to enjoying the outdoors and connecting with nature.

Steve is also a passionate advocate for conservation and outdoor learning. He is an ambassador for The Scouts, Movember, and the Sky Zero environmental campaign, as well as a ‘Get Outside’ champion for Ordnance Survey. In recognition of his work, he was awarded an MBE in 2019 and is an Honorary Lecturer at Bangor University.

Whether speaking at corporate events, international conferences, science festivals or trade shows, Steve engages audiences with key themes such as achieving success, personal growth, motivation and sustainability. His natural warmth, enthusiasm and authority leave people inspired and energised – with a renewed sense of purpose and connection to the world around them.
