About Makaziwe Mandela
Dr Makaziwe Mandela is the eldest daughter of President Nelson Mandela and a prominent global voice on social justice, diversity and inclusion, gender equality and leadership. Based in Johannesburg, she is Chairperson of House of Mandela, a lifestyle brand she runs with her daughter, Tukwini Mandela, and she also leads the House of Mandela Family Foundation.
Dr Mandela holds degrees in Social Work and Sociology, and received both a Fulbright Foreign Scholarship and a Fulbright Distinguished Fellowship Award to study at the University of Massachusetts, where she completed a Master’s in Sociology and a Doctorate in Anthropology. This academic background underpins her deep understanding of social change, community development and the structural forces that shape people’s lives.
As the eldest daughter of Nelson Mandela, Makaziwe Mandela carries a name that resonates across the world. Yet, following her father’s advice that “if your ambition is to be just like your father, you have no ambition at all”, she has worked determinedly to carve out her own path.
