Om Prakash Bhatt is a banker and was Chairman of the State Bank of India until March 2011.
In a career spanning 38 years with the State Bank of India (SBI), Bhatt held a number of roles within the bank, he was responsible for bringing in financial inclusion and leading the project team that pioneered SBI’s technology initiative in the 1990s. He had a stint overseas in London and the US. In 2006, He became Managing Director followed by Chairman later that same year.
Bhatt has also served as chairman of the Indian Banks Association and was previously an independent non-executive director of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation.
In 2013, Bhatt was appointed as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Standard Chartered PLC. He is currently an Independent Non-Executive Director of Hindustan Unilever Ltd, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Steel Ltd, Tata Motors Ltd and Chairman of Greenko Energy Holdings.
Bhatt was awarded CNN-IBN ‘Indian of the Year for Business 2007’, ‘Broker of the Year 2007’ by the Business Standard, ‘Best Executive of the Year 2008’ by Asia Money and ‘Best Banker of the Year 2009’ by the Financial Express.
Bhatt has a degree in Science and a post graduate degree in English Literature.
