Solvej Biddle is an inspiring, internationally successful entrepreneur, inventor and innovator. She is CEO and founder of Content and Calm, a manufacturing and design business of children’ s travel products. After 13 years as one of the UK’s leading advertising lawyers, Biddle decided to focus full-time on an idea that she wanted to develop into a successful product. Content and Calm was launched in 2009 two years later, to universal acclaim by retailers, press and parents alike and won the first of many awards. The business began with one product and one listing in Mothercare, but today has 39 lines in UK’s leading retailers, including Sainsbury’s, Boots, John Lewis, Co-operative and Tesco. It has products stocked in 21 regions worldwide, including the US.
Solvej Biddle is renowned for pitching for a cash injection for her second product TrayKit®, (a backpack which turns into a playspace for children when they are travelling), on BBC’s Dragons’ Den in 2010, and receiving the full amount requested. The exposure on Dragons’ Den led to buyers from major chains contacting her, and other private backers came forward to give the business a further boost. Biddle successfully juggled the logistics of keeping unit costs down while coping with the growing Chinese economy and wage increases there. The company expanded quickly. TrayKit is now selling at the rate of one every five minutes, and other products followed; ProtectiShade® and TrayKit Traveller. Most recently Biddle launched the Cot Canopy Breeze, ProtectiShade Buggy and the TravelBugs – collectable plush toys that hang from TrayKit.
She was Female Business Owner of the Year 2012, Woman Business Owner of the Year at the Network of Aspiring Women Awards 2011, won the Silver award for Most Unique Product at the 2010 Mumpreneur Awards and received the Special Recognition Award from the British Female Inventors and Innovators network in 2009. The products have also picked up many awards since launching including Best Travel Toy USA in 2012, Winner Practical Pre-School Awards Gold and Best Nursery and Toy products of 2013.
