Biography

Marc Descheemaecker is the former CEO of the SNCB-NMBS (National Society of Belgian Railways) from 2005-13. Since then he has been appointed Chairman of the board of directors of Brussels Airport as well as De Lijn, the national public transport company.

Beginning his career at McKinsey in Amsterdam and moving on to Black&Decker in Germany, Vendex and ISS in Copenhagen. In 2002 he was appointed Managing Director of the SNCB freight division going on to be appointed CEO of SNCB in 2005.

At SNCB, Descheemaecker modernised the increasingly obsolete train fleet, creating a 60% increase in passengers yet reducing the workforce by almost 20%. He turned the lossmaking Belgian activities of SNCB in both Thalys and Eurostar into a profitable shareholding in the newly established Thalys sa and Eurostar ltd. The SNCB freight division became a separate entity in 2010 and was partly sold to a financial partner in 2014.

The various shareholders appointed Descheemaecker chairman of the Brussels Airport Company board and he was also appointed chairman of the board of directors at De Lijn, the national bus and tram public transport operator. He is also boardmember at Ethias, a Belgian insurance company, GIMV, a listed portfolio company, and HRD. The Belgian government appointed Descheemaecker director of EIB European Investment Ban where his peers at EIB nominated him as director of the European Invest Fund.

Marc Descheemaecker is considered a proven change manager, and an authority on structural mobility issues, both operational and in terms of investments.

His public stand on racism: “Employers against racism” after the terror attacks on Brussels airport brought him wide spread respect.
