Biography

About Alexandra Pascalidou

Alexandra Pascalidou is an award-winning Greek Swedish journalist, author, broadcaster, playwright, documentary maker, keynote speaker and moderator.

Born in a laundry room and initially raised by a grandmother who could neither read nor write, she moved to Sweden as a child and grew up in Rinkeby, one of the country’s most marginalised suburbs. She became the first person in her family to attend university and went on to build a pioneering media career spanning Sweden, Greece and the international stage.

During more than thirty years in television and radio, Alexandra has hosted major news, cultural and entertainment programmes, the Athens Olympic Games, Eurovision broadcasts in both Sweden and Greece, election coverage, documentaries and prime time interview shows. Her interview subjects have included Isabel Allende, Roger Moore, Roberto Cavalli and Diego Maradona.

Her acclaimed documentary work includes stories about the Greek financial crisis, Roma communities living in extreme vulnerability and mothers who have lost children to gun violence. Her book The Mothers was nominated for Sweden’s prestigious August Prize, adapted for the stage and later became a major documentary series for Swedish Television. Her subsequent work The Fathers explored fatherhood, absence, responsibility and inherited patterns and was also adapted for the stage at Sweden’s Royal Dramatic Theatre.

Alexandra is the founder of the New Academy, the international initiative that created an alternative global literature prize when the Nobel Prize in Literature was cancelled in 2018. The initiative generated worldwide coverage, including CNN, The New York Times, The Guardian< andLe Monde. She has addressed audiences at UNESCO, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Nordic Council of Ministers, Stockholm Peace Talks and international conferences on democracy, leadership, equality and freedom of expression. She is a member of the advisory board of the Athens Democracy Forum and served as Chair of UN Women Sweden from 2022 to 2024. Her awards include Speaker and Moderator of the Year, the Bellman Prize, the St Erik Medal, European of the Year, the Swedish PEN Club Prize and the Women’s Shelters Award for Female Action of the Year. Alexandra is currently developing new literary, television and stage projects rooted in Greek mythology and its startling relevance to modern life.
