Biography

In July 2019 the Prime Minister appointed Conor Burns as Minister of State for Trade Policy in the Department for International Trade. He has been responsible for the architecture of the Government’s vision for trade as the UK leaves the EU in December 2020. He has also been a long term ally and close political colleague of Boris Johnson and therefore has a unique political insight as to the workings of the present UK Government as we go into the final stages of Brexit.

Conor has been MP for Bournemouth West since 2010 and has served in a number of positions in Parliament including two years on the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee.

He was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister of State for Northern Ireland and then the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.

Later he was Parliamentary Private Secretary at the Treasury to the Financial Secretary to the Treasury before being made PPS to the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy where he played a lead role on developing the Industrial Strategy.

In July 2017 Conor Burns became PPS to the Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson. Conor resigned from Government on the same afternoon as Mr Johnson and continued to work with him on a daily basis in the year leading up to the leadership election that saw Mr Johnson become Prime Minister.

In July 2019 the Prime Minister appointed Conor as Minister of State for Trade Policy in the Department for International Trade. He was sworn to membership of the Privy Council in November 2019.

Conor left Government in May 2020.
