Biography

About Iona Bain

Iona Bain is an award-winning money expert, broadcaster, columnist, podcaster and author who specialises in personal finance. She is BBC Morning Live’s resident money expert and one of the programme’s go-to reporters, reaching audiences with accessible, practical reporting on the financial issues affecting everyday life.

Iona’s work draws on years spent meeting and interviewing consumers, regulators, politicians and leaders across the financial services industry. This experience has given her a particular insight into the disconnect between how businesses think people behave and what people actually do when confronted with hard, confusing and overwhelming financial decisions.

She is also a reporter for BBC Panorama and has previously presented BBC Radio 4’s File on 4 and Money Box. Her broadcasting appearances have included Question Time, Woman’s Hour, Newsnight and Radio 1’s Life Hacks. Iona also presents Legal & General’s podcast A Little Bit Richer.

Alongside broadcasting, Iona writes two national newspaper columns, with a weekly column in The Observer and a monthly column in Metro. She was named Financial Journalist of the Year 2025 by the Institute for Financial Wellbeing.

Iona is the author of two books, Spare Change and Own It! How Our Generation Can Invest Our Way to a Better Future. Her work on financial education has also seen her become a celebrity ambassador for National Numeracy and a governor of the Pensions Policy Institute.

In 2024, Iona was awarded the Freedom of the City of London in recognition of her contribution to financial education.

As a keynote speaker and host, Iona combines her experience in journalism, broadcasting and personal finance to explore financial behaviour, consumer trust, technology and the way organisations communicate about money.
